Some more Sub thoughts
Jun. 23rd, 2023 10:18 pmAlso thinking a little about that time in the early 1980s where there was this "scare" of kids who went hiding inside (abandoned) refrigerators and suffocated to death.
....Or how there were so many kids trapped in trunks of cars and suffocated or were being abducted, that Federal Regulations specified an emergency release on the inside......Which....No longer seems to exist?
As I don't seem to have an emergency release on the tailgate of my Outback. I didn't have one on the 2009 or 2007, either. Or are Station Wagons "different" than Sedans?
Learning from past mistakes/disasters like Apollo 1
Maybe this means tours of the Titanic Wreck will be so heavily regulated, or, prohibited.
I'm fairly certain there will be Investigations and Lawsuits and the fallout will be severe.
And maybe that's not necessarily a "bad" thing.
I read a quick thing this morning mentioning that the Titanic wreck itself is slowly deteriorating and will probably no longer exist in about 40-50 years, if that.
Perhaps if the "industry" of touring the wreck goes away, maybe the Rich People will instead invest in the museums and preservation of what's left.....?
(that is until they find another way to selfishly throw their money at)
Wasn't there a guy (uber rich) who was building or looking to build, an exact size replica of Titanic and have it "complete" the journey, and then become....A tourist ride...For rich people....
There's also a small part of me that thinks if you've managed to have that kind of money, and you want to take a mini sub to see the Titanic wreck because you can spend that kind of money, then, well, shouldn't you be able to enjoy that?
You got someone like James Cameron, who is now making his voice and opinion known on the social medias, who managed to earn enough money from his movies he was able to design, build, and pilot his own personal sub, to explore things like the Titanic. And wow isn't that wonderful?. Isn't that Inspiring?!
His. Own. Personal. Sub. So HE could go exploring for his own personal pleasure.
I'd almost say it's like calling the kettle black but he's been adamant he's wholly taken the advice, experience, and engineering of actual experts. He didn't say "nah fuck that I'm doing it my own way"
(although....he did "say" things like "You will sit in this gigantic water tank in 30F water for 8 hours and risk severe bodily harm because I need you to really suffer so you look like you are really suffering for my super awesome movie")
..As for Dr. Ballard, I hold a LOT more respect for, and got to meet him in person once, and, he is one to talk about the risks involved and the work done to mitigate those risks, embracing engineering & science, etc.
Although both of them on one TV News Show looked to be pretty miserable. It was clear on their faces and in the tone of their voices that they knew this OceanGate guy was working against borrowed time and taking unnecessary risks
And meanwhile, some asshole steals Top Secret documents and "hides" them in a guest bathroom at his private luxury country club house. And no one with the authority is batting an eye about it.
...Too much contradiction for one week.
