wayback machine to 1997
May. 5th, 2023 09:04 pmJust finished seeing a movie from 1997. I saw it in the theatre, back when that was a thing, while at Westfield State. I think I've seen a couple of scenes on TV since then.
Since it takes place in Boston, and it being 1997, the whole movie had background scenes and such that made me think "Oh, this was back when..." Or "This was before...."
The Big Dig was still being dug, and 93 was still above ground.
Before the Red Sox won the World Series breaking the curse
And before the Bruins won the Cup breaking the curse from 72.
The Red Line was actually running, and even had the lights flicker now and then
Back when Answering Machines were a thing
Before cell phones, let alone being able to take photos with one, so you had to write stuff down like a date's phone number
Some people were still driving cars from the 1970s as a "daily commuter"
Back when the Internet wasn't constantly on in the background
In the days when CRT monitors and Towers were still a thing
And Screen Savers
Payphones were still a thing
Before white-boards in school/college
The Mass Pike still had toll booths (although none appear in the movie but it's something I'm reminded of)
Dunkin Donuts had a "small" cup
Smoking was still allowed in Bars (Thank goodness that's gone)
A bunch of others came to mind too.
How'dya like them Apples.
It was "Good Will Hunting".
I feel old.
The scene where Robin Williams loses his composure....Now knowing how damaged he was, and it's very clear in that scene he did not have to "dig deep" for the emotional response. Just....Wow.
