While my guitar gently weeps
May. 24th, 2022 06:02 pmI gush a little about Classic Rock music....
An XM radio channel on my drive home played Peter Frampton's cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (and yes it was pretty damn good)
And invariably listening it got me thinking about Harrison and Clapton, the story behind the song (or what little I knew of it until just looking it up a few moments ago), of the Beatles and the headspace Harrison was in during that time (yes I know, 1968 is 10 years before I arrive on the scene, shut up)
and thinking about how screwed up the whole situation was.
And my annoyance with Clapton for being such an incredible musician yet becoming such a raging dick (with the whole cov. and mask mandate / vaccine thing)
and a lot of sympathy for Harrison for being stuck in the living hell he was living at the time, although as mentioned doing more more read-up on the backstory (admittedly it's been a long time since I had), and reading about how Harrison himself wasn't necessarily Mr. Innocent either.
(although I had known for a long time that Layla was Clapton fapping over Boyd but that's a whole other story)
Something Something Austin Powers Monologue About Free Love and No Consequences Something Something Dark Side Something Something Complete
Anyway. Clapton's shredding on that song is just.....HUNNHFFF....Soo Goooood. (Frampton ain't too shabby either, not is Prince's contribution)
Late Beatles and Cream really set the stage for the Heavy Metal sound. The last, uh, 18 years or so of me listening to Cream heavy hitters and realizing just how "dark" and "metal" their sound and lyrics were.
I know it's an age and cultural period nearly 20 years before my comprehension but still, Damn. I would dare say some of it was ahead of its time, almost prophetic.
