"The Court Jester" from 1956
Is pretty amusing.
Some great word-play and subterfuge like "Who's on first" level
Good stunts and typical 1950s "medieval" costumes
A LOT of gags
So much of it made me think of "Robin Hood Men in Tights" and it's very clear Mel Brooks took a lot of cues from this movie. It also has a lot of elements of Errol Flynn Robin Hood from the 1940s.
So it appears Brooks paid homage to both movies.
Even the part with the Princess (in this case the lady Captain) talking in an "English" accent "Oh I'm sew happey"
I think there's a few gags that Phoenix Swords could incorporate (although I wouldn't be surprised if FBHJR already knows about the movie, Just that I don't seem to remember him mentioning it before)
